This is the third snow blower I have owned, and does a great job in major drifts. But I have now ripped the starter cord three times, and disassembly and reassembly takes me almost an hour to repair it. In spite of several inspections, I can see nothing slicing the cord, but something us doing it. I suspect a metal burr somewhere.



All of that said, it starts dependably (when I haven't broken it), and makes short work of my driveway, even in densely packed snow. After a half season that has been especially rough, it all still seems sturdy and hasn't rattled itself apart, the way cheaper units have done in the past.

I purchased from Amazon just prior to the recent large snow store in the mid Atlantic region. We experienced far more snow than is usual for the area, and this machine handled it very well. You maust take into account that this is a $350 item and not a $800 machine. It throws the snow a reasonable distance but the operator must take that into account, I worked from the center of my driveway up and down and in some cases I had to move the same snow twice because of the double width of the driveway. In comparison to my neighbors similarly priced machine this got down further to the pavement and cleared more snow quicker. When the snow gets above 6" you must puch slower and only take about half the width of the clearing space so you dont stall the engine. Overall a good machine and well worth the money.

After reading some of the negative reviews below on this snow thrower, I decided to add my own review of this product. I have had it for two weeks now and I am very happy with it. I just removed between 6-8 inches of hard-packed wet snow from my backyard brick patio (It snowed about 4 days ago and I just got a chance to clean up the yard). This snow thrower was awesome. It shot that snow about 15 feet away (good considering how heavy the snow was). It never bogged down once I had the engine warmed up and the choke in the proper position so the engine ran really smooth.

The engine started with the second pull and about 7 pushes of the prime button on full choke. I decided to put in Mobil 1 5W30 synthetic in it to offer the best protection from cold weather starts. Although the engine is small, it is well suited to this machine. I am not concerned with straining it because it went through really heavy snow today without a problem.

You must know how to use a snow thrower of this size in order to get the full benefits of it. Another reviewer said that it left about an inch of snow behind when he used the machine. The only way this would happen is if the user presses down on the push bar which lifts the front of the blower. When using this machine, make sure to push forward, not down on the push bar. The auger will keep in contact with the pavement and clean up all of the snow straight to the ground.

Another reviewer said that the wheels get snow stuck on them making the snow thrower impossible to push. I don't see how this could happen unless you dumped the snow throwner onto a pile of snow and expected the wheels not to get snow on them.

Out of curiousity, I opened up the side of the machine which contains the belt drive system for the auger. I must say that it is a very simple belt driven system that is completely based on a steel platform. I expect a lot of use from this snow thrower because it is designed simply and well made.

Look around when purchasing this item. MTD has many brands under its marketing belt. This same 2M1 model is branded as a Cub Cadet, Yard Machine, Craftsman and another that I can't recall at this moment. Get the cheapest one as they are all made by MTD and are the same product.

My Toro after 12 years of trouble free use had to be retired. i was given a 21 inch, Yard Machine 31AE 160-129, looked like brand new (year 2004 model)

Well don't waste your money, This is an easy starting engine, with a poorly designed snow throw/blow assembly. If you just want to sit and watch the unit run buy it, but if you actually need to move any snow, forget it.



Did check the latest new versions, same design in every respect.

In use the left wheel quickly builds up a layer of stuck-on snow.

Wheel wont turn.

As soon as you push into any snow, a brief flurry will start to blow out, and then NOTHING more is blown out.

Flapper assembly is FULL with NO throwing action taking place.



Rock the unit up and down to dislodge snow buildup in the flapper, repeat rocking until all snow has fallen out.



Ready to snow throw again!



Push into snow area again, will blow snow for brief flurry again, and promptly clog up, repeat all the 'rock' unit as above to clear clogged snow.

Is humorous, but sad, that this is actually sold as a snow blower.

Like I mentioned the engine is easy starting.

Purchased this product from Lowes in March 09 and it broke down the first time I used it. The automatic drive which turns the wheels works via a small cheap spring that snapped off rendering the machine useless and a small plastic clip that holds the cables in pace cracked due to the cold weather. It was just repaired under warranty, but even the repair shop indicated that I should not expect very good or long term service from this machine. I thought I was getting good value at a reasonable cost. It has a solid chassis and a standard engine, but the other components are cheap. Buy something of better quality.

This machine is only for use with light feathery snow. Anything more and it constantly clogs which is very frustrating. This is my 3rd thrower; the first two were Toros and they NEVER clogged.

With epic snowfalls coming to the DC area, I decided to buy a snowblower. This thing chewed through snow piled at least a foot high with ease. It's easy to put together, it operates easily, and works incredibly well. Like another reviewer, we bought it and had it shipped overnight for dirt cheap as Prime members. It came super fast! It's a powerful machine, but still moveable - we were able to put it in the back of the pickup and went to dig out some friends and family. A great purchase - and I didn't have to fight at a hardware store to wrestle something off of a truck!

Absolutely Recommended! Ordered on Thursday and paid the extra cost of $3.XX for next day delivery because we had a huge snow storm in the forecast. The Snowblower and the storm arrived the next day and the snow blower was really needed. It was very easy to unpack--open carton, remove cardboard and plastic bag, extend handle, add oil (came with it) and gas (remember to buy ahead of time). It started the first pull of the crank and worked hard for two days! It used four tanks of gas doing my neighbor's driveway and mine plus helping many other neighbors dig out from over 34 inches of snow and the build up caused by the snow plows that came through. It's only rated for 4-6 inches but by knocking down the snow with a shovel and working at it with the blower we got thru a build-up of snow that exceede 3 feet in spots (over the top of the engine on the snowblower). Really glad we ordered.



It came on time and worked perfectly--did not have to shovel and lift!

Like the other reviewer, my existing chute shattered. Mine was due to ice, not rocks. So upon receiving this replacement I did the same thing he did and pop rivet some sheet metal inside. I can attest to the fact that that makes a world of difference.



As for the actual chute, the bolt holes are just a hair different than the originals and as such I had a heck of a time getting it on. other than that, it is what it advertises.

I bought this to replace my shattered one on a Craftsmen blower model 536.887992 . If like me you have a stone driveway this will break . But I found if you pop rivet some thin sheet metal (ductwork panning) on the inside of this it will withstand the harsh treatment stones dish out .I live in the Northeast and have "load tested" my upgrade 3 times so far this season and it has exceeded my expectations .

The title says it all. I priced the MTD belt at a local big box and it was more than twice the cost of this. This part appears to be of equal quality so I'm happy to keep the savings.

 "Not good for MTD single stage thrower P/N 954-0101A" 2009-12-30

This belt is generic 0.5"X35" V-belt, which you can easily buy equivalent belt at ACE hardware. The problem is that the generic belt does not work for MTD single stage snow thrower. Single stage thrower uses the belt as a slip clutch & auger brake. Original MTD belt has more fabric than rubber at the friction surface to aid slippage when the auger drive bail is not pulled. But generic V-belt has more rubber because usually V-belt is not for slippage.



So, after a short uses (in my cases, about 4 hours), the belt wears quickly at one spot when the auger drive bail is not pulled.



Another problem is that the auger does not stop effectively. Because the friction at the engine pulley is so great, the belt keeps rolling even when the auger drive tension is released and brake is engaged. This is a safety issue.



In conclusion, don't buy this belt for MTD(Troy-Bilt, etc.)single stage snow thrower. I will check Lowe's if they sell the genuine MTD belt for less than MTD parts online.

I have a Troy-Bilt, but there are obviously many brands that change the color of the plastic and sell it as their own. The owner's booklet listed the belt part number, I found it here on Amazon for about half the price of a local purchase.



After reading my booklet further, I found there was an adjustment to the cable that engages the blower, so I made this adjustment and now this belt is my spare. You might want to check if your machine has 2 holes in the lever on the handle like mine. It took all of 30 seconds to move the cable to the other hole!



Still wouldn't hurt to have a belt when you're ready for it, though.
